Those who claim you cannot catch fish on discount fishing tackle are forgetting that not everyone fishes every weekend or on every occasion. Those how only get on the water a few times each year are not going to spend a ton of money on expensive equipment and seem to be happy with their discount fishing tackle. For many, it is simply an opportunity to sit quietly in a boat or on the shore matching wits with unseen quarry.
Many times when manufacturers change the appearance or function of a piece of equipment they will offer their inventory of the previous style to outlets at reduced prices. They will often do this with an overstock of equipment as well, giving customers the chance to purchase discount fishing tackle with a quality name. There is usually nothing wrong with the merchandise, it is a discontinued item and will perform just as well as the original, which may have cost considerably more.
However, some manufacturers do make similar products using different quality parts and accessories. The merchandise may look the same from the outside, but certain parts may be of a slightly less quality in order to sell them cheaper at outlet stores or as discount fishing tackle at some larger stores. Generally, these items will perform the same, but their durability may be shortened.

The manufacturer claims it helps protect their quality name and those looking for less expensive alternatives will simply by a different brand. Most occasional fishermen will purchase discount fishing tackle, knowing it may have to be replaced in a year or so, but since they do not plan to use it that often, there is no concern regarding how long it will last.
Anglers who are on the water frequently and want to be assured their equipment will perform as promised usually shy away from discount fishing tackle, opting instead for the brand names known for quality and durability. Some claims that plastic gears, for instance will not rust, giving a reel a longer life, others claim that metal gears will not slip or break as easy.
While some makers of quality equipment may also provide discount fishing tackle, research of the brand can identify which products are made and sold as discount fishing tackle and which ones are destined for durability. |
